EMR ‘patenting’

There is a recent newsflash that an EMR company was granted a patent for ‘storing patient data electronically’.

As if there weren’t enough problems with the patent and trademark systems, companies like this are granted superfluous patents that will only hurt innovation.  I hope the industry recognizes this patent for what it is about: a completely obvious and commonly used practice.

Let’s just hope this is a defensive patent and that they don’t plan on suing hospitals for something they’ve been doing before this doctor had his medical license.
